Having Fun With Paper

I have wanted to do quilling for a very long time now. I bought the beginning supplies at Hobby Lobby and then bought some boards and tools from an online quilling store. Quilling is making shapes with thin pieces of colored paper. It is done by curling the paper with a small tool. 🙂

A few weeks ago I sat in my living room and made my first item. It was fun and relaxing. I can’t wait to do some more projects with lots of different shapes.

I would like to sell a few once I get going with it. 🙂

This is what I did with it. My hubby has lots of wood pieces from projects so I decided to put one to use. 🙂

This is sitting on our fireplace mantel. 🙂

I’ve been enjoying the small art projects this month. It is getting my creative juices flowing.

With the end of May brings June, I will dive back into editing my book for the final pass. 🙂 I wanted a break from it.

And I will also be continuing more fun art stuff!

Have a great last day of May! 🙂

Hugs And Kisses

Hugs Kisses

My new canvas art that is now hanging in our newly painted bedroom. I like it. It is teal and yellow paint. The circle and x is made out of a cool copper paper that I found at Hobby Lobby. I love feeling the crinkly paper! The & sign is a thick paper product found at Hobby Lobby. Painted it yellow and then decided to add some bling! I had the color glass for some time and decided to use it finally. I got to play with the glue gun and even burned my finger a few times. 🙂 Still fun.

The only ones to like it on Facebook was my dear sweet daughter and my friend Beth. They are nice people so not surprised they liked it. It was disappointing more didn’t. I guess what matters is I like it and hubby likes it. Or at least that is what he tells me. LOL

Sometimes I let things get to me or read too much into it. I guess when you see all your friends liking other people’s canvas art at those art parties and then they don’t yours it makes me wonder.

I think that is why I struggle with completing my book. I feel once I do and submit publish, no one is going to like it. I then bounce back to who cares? As long as I enjoyed writing it and a few people like it.

A daily struggle.

When will I ever quit caring? Do you struggle with people liking your creations whether it is writing or art? Or am I weird and lacking confidence? 🙂

Organization is Key!

I have been seeing several posts on various internet sites for updating your filing cabinets. I finally got around to doing one of mine. I used the good ole duck tape squares again along with the thin duck tape. I like it a lot. 🙂

I am not sure about the sides yet or the other cabinet. I love the way the sun hits the prism and brings out the colors!

I was also glad to find my exacto knife which made cutting the center handle easy. No measuring required! Lol.

Inside one cabinet is normal paperwork. I tend to be a paper hoarder. I’m afraid if I throw an important paper away I might need it. My paperwork goes back years! I stress years! But I am slowly throwing some away just not those bills. 🙂

I have decided to use the other file cabinet to organize my paper stock. I did have them on a blue shelf divider thing but I found I didn’t use the paper much because it was difficult to see what I had. I figured lets file them away!

Now, I open the cabinet and I can see what I have. I am going to do other craft supplies the same way. The best part is the paper will not get dusty. I dislike dusty paper.

My first month of the year has been organizing. I think I have accomplished quite a bit.

I have done some book editing. Funny thing there, I discovered I had edited way more last year in a beta part of the software and had forgotten about it.  When I took a break over the summer time I had forgot which software site I had used. The software I use had started a beta one for updating and moved it to a different internet address. I forgot about that. I had not saved it to my favorites. Ooops.

So when I picked back up editing in the Fall I opened the old software site because I was use to it. The new one I had used for just a month. I kept thinking, dang I know I had edited more, but I could not remember sites had changed. Crazy!

I love the site but one definite negative part was they didn’t automatically move over my work. Instead, one is suppose to import/export and redo where the chapters go. I’m sure I thought heck with that I will retype, catch more errors, and do my chapters again since I was not far into the editing. Normally, after editing I print out the chapter so I know where I was at. I had not done that. I am definitely doing it now. 🙂

My reading goal this year is 33 books! Yes, I went up even though I did not make my goal last year which was 25 I think. I like 3’s. Maybe it will help me to achieve it. LOL. I did read 2 books and almost have the 3rd done this January. I hope to keep with 3 a month for the low goal. Then that will leave December with no reading if I want. Seems December is tough for me to read during. I get into all the Christmas movies is my downfall. 🙂 I am missing those.

January has been good. I hope everyone else has had a good month! 🙂

Happy writing and happy reading! 🙂

This Little Teapot

I drew these teapots several years ago in college. I had them in a sketchbook and decided to finally put some color to them. I decided on watercolor pencils. I have always enjoyed doing the cross-hatching technique so I did that with the pencils. I have yet to put water to the color but will do that soon. I was anxious to hang them up and put some décor in my kitchen.

This is what it looks like hung up. 🙂

I have plenty of room to add more which there are a few more drawn in my sketchbook. I would like to find some teapot pieces to add dimension to the space. I picture copper ones that are half a teapot. I know I have seen those somewhere.

Eventually, I plan on painting the kitchen a different shade of yellow. It needs touched up. The house is only five years old but I believe several families lived here in those years so it is in need of repainting. 🙂 All in time.

I bought the picture frames at the $1 store. I had to laugh at how cheaply they were made when I placed the drawing inside. I just hope someday they don’t fall down on someone. 🙂 Hey, they look alright. I might even paint the frame a shade of orange later. Still pondering that one. 🙂

I love decorating, just wish I had plenty of money to do it. Don’t we all? 🙂

Have a great day! The sun is shining here and a wonderful 49 degrees. Crazy for January.

A Merry Christmas To All!

Christmas 2014 1I decided to do the lighted Christmas Tree I have been seeing online. I needed to do something in order to plug the lights upstairs in so it seemed like a perfect solution! 🙂 I added some of the boys ornaments they made the last few years.

Christmas 2014 decor - 2 This is why I did the tree. To continue the plug to the outlet downstairs. 🙂

Christmas 2014 7 This year I did this wreath from Christmas cards I have received the last few years. I like to send them and receive them. I have a few that send letters and photos but I have not decided yet what to do with the photos. Next year I will expand on this wreath. Thinking of wood underneath. Pondering that thought.

Christmas 2014 6Christmas 2014 3 Our lovely tree! Daylight and lighted. I love the twinkle of lights. We change the color of the tree every year. Last year was purple, this year browns. Thinking next year blues. 🙂

I have a total of four trees this year.

Outside lights. Hopefully add a little more next year. I have more stored away but didn’t take the time to go through them.

Simple this year. 🙂

I love decorating for the holidays. It will be sad when the blinking lights have to be packed away. I do decorate a little for the other holidays just not as grand.

Our holiday family time consists of hubby, me, and the kids. The days of our bigger family getting together has passed for quite some time. It is sad, but understand with everyone’s busy lives and distance. I do look forward to when our kids begin having families and then once again the big family will get together. We have threatened them that this will happen. LOL.

Our family tradition is a big crockpot full of chili soup on Christmas Eve. My grandma always did that. She made oyster soup too but we don’t care for that. Then for Christmas dinner it varies every year. I am thinking lasagna this year! Yum! It is making me hungry thinking about it.

We usually open gifts on Christmas Eve that each other gives. We try to be simple about the gifts. It gets way too expensive otherwise. But there are fun gifts and even some jokes in the mix. 🙂

Then on Christmas morning the stockings are opened! Filled with one main gift and lots of goodies!

What are your family traditions?

Merry Christmas! Thank you again for liking my blog and reading my ramblings!

Art Every Day Month

I came across another challenge from a fellow blogger, Art Every Day in November.

I signed up!

The rules are pretty relaxed. You can create a piece every day for the month, week, or one for the month. It is to encourage creativity. A neat challenge.

I find when I do creative projects whether it is around the house, my scribble journal, or scrapbooking I tend to write more. It seems to spark the creativeness in me.

I thought why not another challenge along with the my NaNoWriMo challenge. Crazy huh. 🙂

I see it as a break from the writing, especially when writer’s block shows up. Sigh.

If you would like to join along, here is the link! Art Every Day Month!

Happy creativity whether it is writing or art! 🙂

Decor of Halloween!

14 - 5

I love having a fireplace to decorate. There is so much a person can do with it. An added bonus is the cats don’t jump up there so I can have pretties out. At least, they have not tried. 🙂 They have sniffed the scarecrows but I firmly say no and they give that look and walk on. I am amazed at night they haven’t dragged the scarecrows around, but the season is not over. Silly animals.

14 - 6

I once saw someone decorating a tree for all holidays and thought that was pretty cool. I don’t want a large tree up all the time so I bought this small one. I bought a green one so I could reuse for the Christmas holiday. Budget you know!

The foam sticky things make great ornaments. I put a paperclip on them to attach them to the tree. I used Halloween ribbon for my garland. I thought about lights but I have enough lights up at Christmas so I will give my electric bill a break. 🙂

Wall Decor14 - 414 - 3

The wall decorations I chose are a mixture of Halloween and Fall. It will be easy to take down the Halloween and keep some Fall décor up for Thanksgiving. I have noticed that Thanksgiving seems to be short changed when it comes to decorations. I have made some of my own that you will see next month.

14 - 214 - 1

I love the yellows, oranges, and reds of Fall time. Sunflowers remind me of my grandma, so I thought putting them on the TV stand was the place for them. Now, I can think of her when I sit down to watch a show.

Speaking of grandma, how about those Royals!!! Yay, she would have been so pleased to see they made the World Series. I live in Kansas, so definitely excited about them making it after all these years. One thing I never accomplished was taking grandma to a game. It is on my bucket list to go and I believe she will be there with me in spirit. 🙂

I have not decorated outside yet. I am saving that for when hubby can help. He loves to decorate for the trick or treaters. I have one son that still loves trick or treating. My two older kids did until they were in high school then they loved to decorate outside and scare the little kids that came to the house. 🙂

Living in the larger city the last two years we get a lot more trick or treaters. When we lived in the small town we were lucky to get a handful.

Previous years I would buy the candy for Halloween night and we would get all the leftovers. Now, having so many kids coming to the house we run out!

We can not have that, so candy has been in the bowl for a few weeks. I did chocolate first and now it is taffy, skittles, and starburst.

Of course, I hid some chocolate elsewhere for me. 🙂

Normally, we do not keep candy in the house but holidays is different. The boys know to ask first before having some. Even though, I’m sure they sneak a few.

Flower Explosion

I decided to learn more about my Illustrator program so I signed up for Skillshare. I love the mini classes.

What would we do without videos these days?

The first class I took was Digital Illustration: Doodles to Designs by Jon Burgerman.

First the teacher had us draw doodles. The first one was doodle with your eyes closed!

Doodle 1 Close Eyes (492x640) Looks like a two-year old scribbling, but it was fun. 🙂

Second one we had to doodle what we know.

Doodle 2 Draw what you know (490x640) I have always liked drawing flowers. I mostly drew it without picking up my marker.

The third thing he had us turn the page as we drew and not pick up the marker.

Doodle 3 Turn page do not lift pen (490x640)

The final drawing was a new piece of paper and trace things from all three doodles that we wanted in our new drawing.

Doodle 1 (492x640) My end result!

We scanned it into Photoshop to clean up the lines and the background. A new skill that I knew was possible but was not sure how to go about it. Once it was cleaned up we opened it into Illustrator and he walked us through the Live Trace and the Live Paint option. I had fiddled with those two things but could never get them to work right.

Happy camper to know how to do them now. 🙂

Here is the cleaned up version of lines.

Fixed Lines Doodle 1 (492x640) It makes a difference with the background if you look at the one above.

My colorful explosion.

Colors-Doodle-2 - Copy (491x640)

I have a saved file for the basic line drawing so I can go in and do different color combinations. I am definitely going to work on more doodles so I can get more of a picture out of it than this one was.

The neat thing is you can have this put on different items like T-shirts, mugs, etc. I do have a Zazzle shop (click on Zazzle and it will take you there) that has a couple of my images from a long time ago. I hope to get more designs on there as I get better at creating.

I find doing projects like this gets my creative mode going and it is a nice break from writing and editing. 🙂

Plus, makes for great household decorations! 🙂

Happy Friday! Have a great weekend!

Time Flies!

All 4 Kids Fall

A photo I took in the Fall of 2003. My kiddos.

I have been editing this photo today to upload it to a site that will put it on a canvas. My daughter gave me the gift a year ago for Mother’s Day. Yes, the procrastination in me showing through. 🙂 I wasn’t sure at first what picture I was going to do. I took the year to think, yes, that is the reason for the procrastination. 🙂 (It sounds good.)

I went to upload and they suggest a bigger size. I will have to play some more in Photoshop. I do like how it turned out. I tried and tried that day to get them to all look at me and they never did. 🙂 I ended up with a couple photos with different expressions. I took this with an old 35mm film camera because I didn’t own a digital at that time. It was a cheap and simple camera. This is scanned in from a photograph. 🙂

I am glad digital camera’s were invented. I still have about six rolls of film to develop from back then. I have already developed over fifteen rolls. They have turned out well, other than my terrible photo taking skills. I kept them in a box in a drawer so they were not exposed to heat or light over the years.

I love when I get them back in the mail. It’s a good thing I know the year of the surroundings otherwise I would have no idea what year they were. 🙂

Funny when you can label your years by what home remodeling project was going on. 🙂

I have a whole tub of photos that need slapped in a photo album. I haven’t even begun to print off all the digital photos. It will keep me busy. I will always have something to do on those boring days.  🙂

I really should get them done before the two older kids start having their own families. 🙂

How do you keep your photos? Are they in a scrapbook or in a tub like mine? 🙂
