Never Ending Learning

I have begun another online learning class. It is through Edx.org. The class is A Global History of Architecture.

Now, why would I take that?

Since grade school when my art teacher had us draw a house I became fascinated with houses. I knew I wanted to be an architect. Like any other kid I also wanted to be a writer, artist, and archeologist. LOLย  ๐Ÿ™‚

But my main passion has always been houses.

In High School, I took drafting and enjoyed it a lot. I designed a mansion with a hot tub that had a waterfall to it which recycled the water. A sink in every bedroom and more windows than a skyscraper! I won a blue ribbon at the Industrial Arts Fair! ๐Ÿ™‚

Then college happened.

I did not get to go where I wanted to go because my family didn’t like it. Too far, too expensive, etc. etc.

I still believe it would have been the better route.

But, hey, what does a teenager know?

My first choice was the Art Institute in Denver. We visited it and I loved it. My thought was to do the degree in art, find a job where an Architect program was and work my way through school. I’d be doing something I enjoy while achieving my dream. But, no, family vetoed it.

Instead they convinced me to go somewhere a current family member was going. There was a pre-architect program plus interior design degree. I was ok with it but there was a bit of me that was sad. It wasn’t my choice.

Many times I did try to change schools but obstacles got in the way. I did about three years but not always good grades. I did meet lots of great friends and had fun, so not all was lost.

Sometimes the mind wonders if the effects of the choice of school didn’t create my lack of finishing certain things. I wonder.

Life directed me back to my hometown. No college there, too small, but there were outreach classes and a two-year college was 40 miles away.

I went back to getting that art degree in Graphic Design plus business classes. I took my time. Good grades were the result.ย  I finished the degree after meeting my soul mate. He was a big supporter and that’s what I needed. He has always encouraged me. I got my Associates Degree of Art in 2004. All four of our kids plus my grandma got to be at the graduation. ๐Ÿ™‚

Then I got the bright idea to apply to the Art Institute online program. I did good but I felt my art was not up to par. Most in the class were already people in the field and their art was superb! Got me down. I dropped out, plus it was expensive.

Now, that I have debt in student loans, I have learned to take the “free courses”. ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t earn a degree but it makes me happy learning. ๐Ÿ™‚

This Edx.org class is free but you can earn a certificate which is 49.00. Pondering that one.

I may be one of those 80ย yr olds who appear in the news for completing her degree but yet too old to be hired. LOL

Meanwhile, I will enjoy the learning and keep my brain active. My grandma had dementia. I really don’t want it. Miss her.

Who knows, may pick up some research for a new book or story!

Cheers to learning! Never to young or old! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy 4th of July!

3 kids in obey treeย We went to our Puzzle House on the other side of Kansas on Saturday after picking up the goofy daughter at her house. This tree was once a stick as high as my waist. I’m short. ๐Ÿ™‚

We were always yelling at them while they were growing up to stay out of the tree because it could not hold them. Well, the last few years it has really shot up there and can now hold them. ๐Ÿ™‚ Amazing.

Missing the oldest son, he is in the Navy and came home a week ago but had to go back.

The three lit off some fireworks after helping us with yard work and cleaning up some stuff at our grandma’s house down the street. So we have 3 houses in total to take care of. We enjoy it, just wish more time and more money to do the maintenance the way we want to. Little by little.

Came back on Sunday and I took the daughter and youngest to the Bret Michaels concert in the park. Free! ย Terrific concert! The kids enjoyed it.

They are now down at the carnival again. Hubby and I will venture down closer to firework show time. ๐Ÿ™‚

That has been our 4th of July celebration. Simple, fun, and full of family time. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope everyone has had fun and stay safe! Cheers to freedom! ๐Ÿ™‚
