Morning Sunshine

17904266_10154373872287483_2964761958218887982_n (My breakfast this morning)

I was in the mood for eggs this morning. 🙂 I’m usually terrible with fried eggs but this time I did not break the yoke. I wasn’t impatient for once. 🙂

Breakfast reminds me of growing up living with my grandparents. Grandma always had breakfast for grandpa and I every morning. Sometimes cereal, eggs, pancakes (Sundays) etc. The point was we didn’t leave the house without eating and it was all three of us together. I always had orange juice and a vitamin with my breakfast. I rarely got sick. Maybe a cold once a year but a mild one. Grandma was organized and in charge.

I did not learn that lesson from her. My youngest son does eat cereal in the morning, most of the time. The middle son grabs a quick bite usually. Today I made him frozen waffles with peanut butter on it and a vitamin.  🙂

When the other two kids were growing up, breakfast stuff was available and sometimes they ate it on their own. Other times they would eat at school. Me, I was terrible when I was working, never gave myself enough time to grab something, so it was stuff at work. It usually was something not so healthy. Now, that I am at home, I eat way better.

Having a healthy breakfast in the morning is something I wish I had done better for all four kids and hubby. We still are fairly healthy, good genes, I guess. 🙂  It might not be all my fault, society as a whole is in such a hurry in the mornings that I think a lot of people grab quick stuff. It is the thing to do.

We do eat supper together and even when I worked. Sometimes it was late at night when everyone was home but we made a point majority of the time to eat together. Now and then one or more would be gone for something but I think we did pretty good.

We eat together at night now. The adult daughter living with us, most of the time eats with us, so that makes me happy. We don’t allow cellphones at the table either. 🙂 Probably once a week is make your own meal and that is at different times. I like a break from cooking plus it helps them to learn how to figure out a meal for themselves. Sometimes leftovers and other times quick meals.

One thing that is the same, there is a TV in view from the table, even growing up. It has not hampered any conversations believe it or not. We tend have some interesting ones while eating. Kids are rather comical. Good family time. 🙂

Do you eat together? How many meals?

—- growing up,

  • breakfast together
  • lunch when school was out
  • supper when grandma wasn’t working otherwise it was grandpa and I.

—- now,

  • breakfast on weekends half the time
  • lunch is on our own unless I switch the day’s meal to then and not supper
  • supper almost always.

Times change and not always for the better.

Time Goes Fast

Loved this book. Lots of interesting characters that are fun and real. Friendships, little romance, and several murders mixed with time travel and a treasure hunt. Love the setting in Prague and the castles. The villain is an intriguing character with a KGB past. Lots of fun reading. Terrifically wrote! Recommend!

I had checked this out at the library and almost didn’t because it was such a long book. I actually read most of it yesterday. 🙂 Now, I want to read the next one.

So far my Goodreads reading challenge is at halfway. Better than last year, so that is ok. I probably could read the other half of the books but we are coming up on a busy time of year. I won’t hold myself to it. I should have read more earlier in the year.

Ooops. Goal for next year.

I am glad that I am reading regularly again. For the better part of twenty years I didn’t read much other than textbooks and kids books. I guess that counts.  🙂

Personal accomplishments since last blog:

  1. Normal day-to-day house and kids’ taxi service. When will the taxi service stop? lol
  2. Garage reorganized, again. Oldest daughter has her stuff in there now so it needed better placement. Now there is room for working on some furniture refinishing projects. And all the bugs are swept out for the Fall. It was bugging me seeing all of them. 🙂
  3. Kids are doing good. Good grades. Youngest had broken his school tablet but since it was an accident at school and his first warning we didn’t have to pay for it. Thank goodness. That would have been tough. Still not a fan of having school laptops. I believe in paper and pen.
  4. I still haven’t finished my Halloween decorating. Working on one wood project that will have Halloween on one side and Fall on the other. Will post when I complete this week. I’m not sure I will hand out candy this year. Our street gets really busy and one might as well sit outside and hand it out as many times as the doorbell rings. We have a doorbell camera and after a while last year it started going off on its own. Ghost? Maybe. lol

It’s been a bit productive. Time just flies so fast these days. I need more hours in the day to accomplish all that I want. I have stopped watching as much evening TV shows. I now catch up later with OnDemand. Lots of new shows. I really like Bull, Lethal Weapon, and Secrets and Lies to name a few.

I hope everyone has a lovely day and read something good! 🙂

What Have I Been Up To?

  1. Survived 2nd week of boys back to school! 🙂
  2. Solved middle son’s health issue. So relieved it turned out minor. He is a smiley boy again.
  3. Surviving the oldest and only daughter invading our house. LOL. She moved back in for a while. It’s been nice to have a female around once more.
  4. Began editing my novel, again. I believe I have solved the first chapter whoas. It was holding me back. Now on to checking grammar and flow of the rest of the book. 🙂
  5. Getting a lot of computer work done. Some paid, some not. Lots of learning being accomplished. I love learning. I soak in all I can.
  6. I have started going to the library again. It helps that my middle son’s school is close by. 🙂 Win, win situation. I go a little early and spend time reading. End result, reading more! 🙂
  7. I have been going through totes, boxes, and files. Tossing, sorting, and finding forgotten treasures. It has been way overdue. I have separated the 4 kids’ stuff into their own tote. Plan on making memory journals instead of traditional photo albums. It’s been fun. 🙂

Purrfect

This is one of my daughter’s cats, Nocca. Think I spelled that right. 🙂 Daughter is at annual army training so we are watching her two cats.

I thought for sure that balloon was going to pop and send the cat in the air! LOL But it didn’t. Pets are rather entertaining.

On a sad note, one of our cats got out the front door when kids were opening it and we can’t find him. Heartbroken. Hopefully, he will find his way back. He is not an outdoor cat though. There are so many wooded areas around here and traffic. Worries us. We sure miss him.

Practice Practice Practice

When I was in grade school my grandma enrolled me in piano lessons. I enjoyed it but didn’t always practice as much as she wanted me to. So, she got the idea I was not interested. I enjoyed, just wanted to play outside.

Maybe that is where 3 of my 4 kids that play a band instrument got their “no practicing” at home from. I must say they play their instruments well and receive good grades in band.

Which brings me to my grandma who could play the piano very well. The amazing thing is she did not know a single note. She played by ear. It was amazing. I miss her piano playing and the family gatherings when everyone would sing along as she played.

We still have that piano sitting in her house that my family and I maintain still. My aunt was going to take it to her house but then decided to give it to my daughter. I imagine it will stay within those walls for a while yet until the daughter is done moving around. I bet I can lift the piano bench seat up and find my old piano books. I need to do that the next time we are back home.

I did not stay with piano lessons. I wish I had. Maybe if I had one of these guitar center keyboards I would have continued on. I secretly wanted one back then but since I quit piano I knew I shouldn’t ask for one. They are priced decently and the amazing things you can do with them nowadays. Maybe when I get that jamming guitar I will add an electric keyboard. 🙂

I can drive my hubby nuts in retirement with all the musical instruments. 🙂

When our oldest son played the drums in school I kept telling the hubby we needed a drum set to keep him interested, but he said no way. Party pooper!

No Is No

I have been pondering what I wanted to blog about when a lady started this debate with me on my Facebook wall. One, I shared a neat wooden sign of rules.

1891066_658020927570236_1711459499_n Image credit to Facebook.com. That’s a first. LOL.

I think the sign is good because it is showing that you mind your parent’s rules, no making your own. Which is really tough in today’s generation, they are all about not following rules. I grew up with these rules and no way did it hurt me or make me think my grandma was a mean person. It was teaching me to respect her and to respect authority. The clothing part is a mutual agreement on what to wear. I will not allow my kid to wear something that is profane or too short for school, etc. I’m sorry, I am not going to rush out and buy them expensive clothes just because they want it! No! Most times, clothing is shopping together and coming to an agreement.

The second one of washing it, you can most definitely put it away! I did growing up. I actually have taught my kids to do their own laundry. Still working on the putting away. But they do take it to their room. They are not going to be lazy. Once in awhile I will put it away but not so much anymore. Mine our teens and they can do their own. In fact, 90% of the time they do their own bedding as well. 🙂

The bed time one, darn right, if I say bed you go to bed! I will not allow them to choose their own bed time. That is not good for them. They are still learning and they do not know what is best for them yet. Plus, they need sleep and they need a routine. No phones either! I have them turned off at night. Though sometimes Verizon settings don’t always work I find out. They are shut down from 11pm to 6am. On weekends I do leave them on all night and sometimes wish I didn’t, but if they are away and need me then they can call. I even struggle with them having phones as teens. We waited until they were a teen which is way longer than most. I do get a bit relaxed on the weekends for bedtime. It just depends what is going on. I really dislike sleepovers because they never go to sleep. When other kids stay we have tried getting them to go to sleep and they won’t. It wouldn’t bother me so much but the kids are fricken noisy and then we can’t sleep. No respect for others. At least as a kid we whispered and just talked. These kids wrestle, etc. Drives me batty. Sleep time is for calming down.

The phone thing, darn right, we are paying for it, if we say get off, get off. And even if they are paying for it but in our house same rule applies. We do this mostly at supper time or if we are doing a family thing. No reason to be on the phone when it is interrupting our time together. Call them back. Phones don’t belong at our table. End of story.

The no thing is what got the other person debating with me. She thinks I should give an answer because it makes them thinkers! Hell no, not when they argue the answer you gave! I am the parent, my answer is final! You do not keep asking why when I said no! All that is doing is encouraging them to argue with authority! No!!!

Doesn’t mean you have to agree but no means no. My goodness is her kid gonna argue with a policeman, teacher, or a boss? Good luck with that! I think she is the problem with  society in the way she is rasing her kids. I was nice on Facebook so I did not get mean or anything because I do know she has her right to her opinion but it was like my opinion didn’t matter!!! I’m pretty sure my kids will turn out better than hers at least in authority and following rules.

What do you think? Yes, I will welcome your opinion. 🙂

Thanks for letting me vent. 🙂

Welcome New Year 2016

Howdy everyone!

I hope the holidays were good and filled with lots of memories. It was wonderful here. I did get a cold but I nursed it with lots of orange juice and chicken noodle soup. 🙂 My grandma always treated a cold that way. Thank goodness it lasted only a week.

We had a house full. The daughter was able to spend a little over a week with us. She also brought her two cats along. It was fun watching our three cats mingle with them. Of course, the cats favorite person was my hubby. He has that way with animals. He gives them lots of attention.

The oldest son made it for a week on leave from his Navy training. His oldest friend from high school joined in the fun and stayed as well. It seemed like old times. 🙂

I did not get any baking done for the holidays though. Bummer. I think I missed that last year too. Hopefully, this year will be different. Though the boys did say they would give up gifts if we could go somewhere for Christmas. Cool. Though that will be more expensive than the gifts. We don’t give expensive gifts normally.

Normally we give a few things that they want, money, and some fun childhood gifts like foam dart guns. LOL. We like to bond and laugh more than give expensive stuff. Plus, it takes the pressure off of spending more than the budget can handle. 🙂

We leave those expensive gifts for during the year so the kids can learn to help save up and pay for them. I know all their friends got these cool gifts but I’d rather them work towards them than be handed them. Plus, we have had Christmas’ where we could barely afford a fifty dollar gift let alone the high dollar ones. I don’t want them to be disappointed from Christmas to Christmas. I’d rather set the tone for a low key Christmas than bounce from high dollar to low dollar. I’ve tried shopping early, it don’t work. I’ve tried saving up, it don’t work. LOL This way works for us. I’m glad other families can do what they want to do, so I don’t look down on those that spend a lot. This is just what works for us. 🙂

Most Christmas’ hubby and I do not exchange gifts especially when the budget is tight. We usually get something we want a few months later. 🙂 Hubby spoiled me. I must say it is also a gift for him. He bought me a new used car with low miles. Our other one was starting to have issues beyond what he wanted to repair. He was worried about me breaking down with him on the road a lot. And with all the dings and dents in the old car the value was declining for a trade in. I will just need to do some creative cutting back on the food. No problem! Two growing teenage boys. LOL

He also got me a lounge chair for my Creative Cave! Best gift ever!  He now has a place to sit when he bothers me. LOL  It worked nicely for a bed for the daughter while she was here too. 🙂

I really love how it turns to a lounge chair. Reading chair! 🙂

He also got me a pretty glass item for my curio cabinet. I didn’t take a picture. Too many stairs to run up. 🙂

I promised him his big TV as soon as we can. 🙂

I hated seeing everyone leave but we must all get back to normal routines. 🙂

I will say I’m ready for Spring now. 🙂 I got my first bulb and flower magazine in the mail the other day. Ready! Where is Spring?
